Food Review: Keng Heng (Whampoa) Teochew Lor Mee
(located in Beach Road Market)
Traditional Teochew Lor Mee
Price: $3/4/5 (pictured is $3 and $5 bowl)
Strongly recommend that you go for the bigger bowl if you are a big eater. $3 is more of a snack portion. Imagine the size of the traditional rooster bowl.
In the $3 bowl, it comes with noodles, a few slices of ngoh hiang and fish cake, braised pork belly, fried wanton and fried fish.
In the $5 bowl, it comes with noodles, a few slices of ngoh hiang and fish cake, braised pork belly, 3 fried wanton, 2 pieces of fish skins and 2 fried fish.
The portion is generous and probably explains why people are queuing for this. One other factor could also be that the preparation / serving time is slightly longer than other stalls.
Now to the taste. The braised sauce is starchy, smell of the spices are not that strong. It's better than standard Lor Mee in food court but it didn't impress me as much as Mei Xiang in Old Airport Food Market. The ingredients wise like what i mentioned previously are generous for $5 bowl. The good thing about this Lor Mee is the fried stuff are very crispy but other than that, the ingredients are pretty standard in taste. The bowl comes with minced garlic, chopped chilli padi, coriander and vinegar. You can ask the owner to add on if required.
This Lor Mee also comes with a different type of chilli. Usually it's the sambal in other stalls, but in this case it's raw blended chilli. The result is a not-too-spicy mix with a little garlicky flavour.
All in all, if I'm in the vicinity and I have a craving for Lor Mee, I will visit the stall definitely but I would probably not travel specially just to get this though.

This is the carpark behind Beach Road Market. Not the one besides. Usually Beach Road Market is very packed so it's easier to park at this MSCP.
