Food Review: Kok Kee Wanton Noodles
(located along Foch Road in a coffee shop, directly opposite 正文志记猪什汤大王)
Price: $5 standard size only
Kok Kee is finally back and located very near to the previous location. As per last location, they have rented 2 stalls again but operating hours has changed from the past. Many years ago, the operating hours covered till late night and slowly they have adjusted their operating hours probably due to aging. The return now include more staff with the old auntie and her daughter, plus 2 more aunties and 1 youngster.
The way of ordering is still the same and you will hear the old ladies speaking in Cantonese and repeating orders as they move along the orders.
Onto the taste part, the same old unami taste of the MSG alike sauce (i don't think there is a lot of MSG as i do not feel thirsty after so all is still good), sweet and soya taste with one unique taste in the sauce. The sauce is oily as usual but it makes the noodles smoother and better tasting.
Chilli sauce is not as spicy as in the past but still good in that uniqueness.
Noodles is al dente as usual. The portion seems to have increased maybe due to the increase in price and feedback from customers. Still not the biggest portion but I think it's good enough for average eater.
Chashu, as usual is the infamous dry like hell colored barbeque pork. Nothing great but behold, it brings out the contrast of the noodles and sauce. Probably the reason why it's there in the first place.
Wanton wise has improved in size and content with more pork instead of the past miserable portion. The dry wanton dish is basically a plate of wantons and little greenies laced with sauce. If you do not want the noodles and feel like eating wantons with the famous sauce, this could be the solution for you.
Soup wise is nothing great and has the usual salted veg taste of the past. Don't really taste any MSG so I guess it's still good to go.
All in all, Kok Kee wanton noodles is back with the same taste and probably a better portion experience though it's still pricey for wanton noodles. But hey, if we can pay for ramen which is about 2 to 3 times the price, let's do a little bit to preserve what is left of our past history. It's definitely still a go-to wanton noodles for me except maybe not that regular.

Depending on time of the day, roadside parking can be challenging or alright at the same time. When roadside parking along Foch Road is difficult, Aperia Mall offers an easier parking option though you probably have to walk a little. Another option is to try Jalan Besar Stadium car park.
