Food Review: Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee

(located on level 2, Hong Lim Food Centre)

Fried Kway Teow
Price: $4 (add cockles $2, add egg 50cts)

Outram Park Fried Kway Teow had always been one of the go-tos for my fried kway teow cravings in the past especially when it was still located near the makeshift market near SGH. I remembered the days when I spent quite a bit of time doing overtime in my younger days and this would be my late night dinner. So I decided to revisit the stall after so many years of missing it.

The ingredients used in Outram were a little different from others. Usually you will find Chinese sausage and vegetables used but in Outram, they omitted the 2 ingredients. What you could find in the plate would be the kway teow with fresh cockles, eggs, fish cake slices, bean sprouts and pork lard.

The kway teow here used plenty of pork lard. The uncle stir frying the kway teow did a very good job in maintaining the work hei and heat in the wok so the end result was a smokey plate of kway teow noodles.

The flavour of the plate was a little sweet and mainly savoury. Noodles were fried to perfection with little charred probably due to the high heat and the eggs were mixed nicely and integrated into the noodles. Not overly empowering with the eggy taste and eggs were evenly distributed.

The pork lard flavour added strongly to the overall flavour. Cockles were very fresh and plenty and it balanced the noodles very well.

Special mention must be given to the pork lard. The pork lard were very crispy, big sized and well made. You could literally see them in the noodles and single them out to eat individually. But do take note of the oily aftermath as it can be very gelat.

In summary, definitely still remained as one of my foodie list to visit from time to time. Another stall that I would highly recommend is Hill Street Fried Kway Teow at Bedok South. The old owner wasn't around anymore but the son took over now. Not better than his father but still pretty good. His father was very consistent but it may vary a little from time to time with his son though.

4V out of 5
