Food Review: Poon Nah City Home Made Noodles

(located in City Plaza)

Mee Hoon Kwey (Dry)
Price: $4.50/$5.50 (Pictured:, $5.50)

Had some time for lunch and one friend cum colleague recommended to visit Poon Nah to try their Mee Hoon Kwey and so we took his car and came over to have lunch.

Poon Nah's Mee Hoon Kwey, initially looks like a normal mee hoon kwey and in fact, it looks more like a modern mee hoon kwey. In my memory, the traditional mee hoon kwey was only pure tapioca leaves mee hoon kwey cooked in anchovy broth. Oh well I thought it's probably just another normal run-the-mill one.

Comes with 2 prawns, minced pork meatballs, caixin vegetable, fried anchovies etc, and doesn't even come with egg. What could be so nice about this?

After mixing the bowl, I had the first taste. OK nothing great just dark soya sauce with pretty well fried anchovies, meat was flavoured and prawns pretty fresh, nothing great.

Tried the soup, as usual, nothing great. Just the usual mee hoon kwey flavour with no or little MSG which is good but still nothing great.

The magic came when i start to add in the chilli. Oh boy, chilli is real good! While I'm not a fan of "chilli enhance all flavours" in a lot of food influencers' opinion but I have to say for this bowl, the chilli is really the game changer. The chilli is made up of chilli padi with a strong punch. I'm not sure if it's just chilli padi alone or a mix but the chilli is strong for sure and once it's mixed into the bowl of mee hoon kwey, the chilli immediately brings out the unami flavour of the whole bowl! The bowl no longer feels flat but it has an extra flavour (not chilli) now. Just couldn't put my finger on how to describe it.

One special mention on the mee hoon kwey. Though the mee hoon kwey is not thin and of a usual thickness, the good thing is that you can eat the springiness of the kwey and the dough flavour which I appreciate a lot. One improvement is for the kwey to be thinner. One more positive point was that it's hand torn so it gives you a different sizing and gives you a mixed mouth of texture as well.

All in all, a good bowl of dry mee hoon kwey. I would recommend trying the dry version but maybe not the soup version. I could be wrong about this since my review on the soup was purely based on the soup I had and it may be better so you can try and make your own verdict on this.
